Headrests on office chairs are often seen as a sign of luxury and comfort. The common perception is that a chair with a head rest is higher quality or more “ergonomic”. But at Anthros, we've taken a different approach. There are good reasons why we decided against including headrests in our chair design and this blog is meant to illuminate these reasons.
The Common Perceptions of the Benefits of Head Rests
Support for the Neck and Head: Many people believe that a headrest is essential, particularly when reclining or leaning back.
Postural Relief: A headrest can provide a change of position for people who spend a lot of time at a desk, possibly reducing tension on the shoulders and neck.
Perceived Comfort and Relaxation: The luxury and tranquility that come with having a headrest might be linked together.
Reasons Why Anthros is Headrest-less!
Anthros chairs are made with a distinct philosophy and a thorough expertise of how to support the human body when seated. Here's why a headrest isn't included:
It's an Active Task Chair: Anthros chairs are intended to be active task chairs. Instead of encouraging passive or static sitting, this design promotes dynamic sitting, which keeps the body involved and engaged for daily tasks. We didn’t design a recliner 😉
Two-Part Back System: The unique two-part back system of the Anthros chair is a standout feature. By maintaining the pelvis in a neutral position, this naturally aligns the neck and spine. The head rests in a neutral, ideal position when the spine is correctly aligned and doesn't require extra support.
Promoting Good Posture: Users are more likely to maintain an active, healthy posture when there is no headrest. Headrests can at times promote hunching over or leaning too far back, which can cause discomfort and bad posture.
Addressing Customer Feedback
We strive to LISTEN! Anthros is aware that several customers have requested a headrest, particularly those who play video games or tilt their chairs for extended periods of time. In order to balance client requests and our biomechanical principles, we have started the design process with the possibility of including a headrest for these particular preferences.
Anthros' choice to omit the headrest from their chair design stems from our deep understanding of seating and human anatomy. Our approach emphasizes neutral pelvis support and dynamic sitting, which automatically realigns the body and lessens the need for a headrest. We distinguish ourselves in the market with this design philosophy, which highlights our dedication to productivity, health, and wellness through human-centric design supported by science.
