How to relieve buttock pain in sitting?

Toggle

Many of us have no choice but to sit all day for our work, and it’s a pain in the butt! Literally.

Usually, the cause of pain in the buttocks is directly related to the surface that we are sitting on. So, it’s important to learn about seat surfaces and how they can be the cause or the cure for buttock pain.

Mesh

Mesh has been touted as a desirable chair medium for its breathability. But let’s step back and just look at it as a seat surface.

The only way to create a stable surface with mesh is to pull it tight and attach it to a firm frame. This results in a tight, stretched surface and when we sit on it there is very little immersion that can happen. This creates very high peak pressures on the bony prominences of the buttocks, and the ischial tuberosities, which in turn results in discomfort or sciatic pain. So, if you’re looking for relief from buttock pain, mesh is not the answer!

Foam

Many chairs offer foam seats, so are those the best solution to mesh? Not necessarily.

Most of us have never thought about this, but not all foam is alike. There is such a thing as cheap foam and quality foam. When purchasing a low to mid-tier office chair, you are typically getting a low-quality 2” square of foam on a plywood or plastic base. It may feel okay for the first thirty minutes of sitting, but as the day goes on, those bony surfaces, the IT’s will feel the pressure. That is because there is very little immersion or envelopment that can happen on cheap foam. That means the pressure can’t be distributed over a larger surface, and it is focused mostly on the IT’s.1 This results in discomfort or pain.

Some cheap foam seats are very plush and soft. Again, it may feel good for the first thirty minutes, but that soft foam provides little stability and results in a slouched posture that leads to discomfort or pain.

So, what’s the solution if mesh and foam aren’t it?

You need a seat that was designed by professionals who created seat cushions for the most intense sitters on the planet- wheelchair users. Using this expertise Anthros has designed a seat cushion for the Anthros chair that is unlike any other on the market.

Using anthropometric data (measurements of the human body) and the highest quality foam, the Anthros cushion has been described as “sitting on a cloud”. It is contoured to match the human shape and has pressure-relieving cutouts in the areas of the IT’s. This allows the IT’s to sink into the cushion and “float” while the contours2 distribute pressure over a large surface area creating the feeling of comfort and stability.
