Hey everyone! I’m Julie, a passionate member of the Anthros team. Today, I'm super excited to share with you my journey with our incredible Anthros chair.
Let me start by admitting my expectations surrounding the arrival and experience of my chair were impossibly high. One of the many hats I wear at Anthros involves writing blogs, so I have done quite the deep dive into the science and history that made this chair a reality. All this “homework” really has made me, not only an enthused team member, but also a believer! To be real, there has been A LOT of build up around the launch of this chair. It’s an entirely new innovation. At times, privately, I did wonder. Would reality match the excitement? Would the final execution of this chair prove to be worthy of all the hype? I was certainly hopeful! But I knew only time would tell.
The Big Day - My Initial Impression
At last, my chair arrived! I could hardly wait to experience this chair firsthand. Two huge boxes arrived on my doorstep inscribed with our slogan and promise: FIX YOUR SIT. We couldn’t get them open fast enough! My first glimpse was the color and texture of the cushion – stylish and super soft. All the elements were beautiful and substantial, high quality. As a member of the team, I felt happy for my friend Steve, our inventor, and the small team who had worked on this for so long. The Anthros chair really is the culmination of a dream and has been a courageous, four-year journey for everyone involved!!
The Initial Sit
Once I assembled my chair, my first impression sitting in it was: WOW. This IS amazing - REALLY comfortable and supportive, especially in the slight tilt position. I loved the chair right away. It was also even more attractive in person than I pictured. I played with the adjustments to fit it to my posture. I have to admit, I realized right away that I needed a better desk to go with my better chair…so it goes when you upgrade!! But we were off. I was finally sitting in my Anthros chair and loving it.
Getting Real: The Adjustment Period The First Couple Weeks
How were first couple weeks? Honestly, they were a bit uncomfortable. My body wasn’t used to the upright posture the chair encouraged, and the gentle push on the pelvis area was a new sensation. I found myself continually adjusting the chair, in search of the perfect balance between comfort and support. I definitely had the thought, “what have I gotten myself into?” Am I going to like this long-term? The main discomfort seemed to come from the lower back pelvis support placement. This positioning was new for me and something I had never experienced before. My body was clearly not used to sitting with this proper posture. It felt a bit too upright and stiff for me. However, I knew this was the key to helping me to “fix my sit” so I pressed on, leaning into the science and research I had been writing about for many months!
Posture Correction Takes Time: Learning to Ease Up and Be Comfortable
Looking back, I think I was a little TOO ready for this chair that was going to correct my poor posture. This made me a little too aggressive with the posture support settings in the beginning. Like most of us, I had been sitting with bad posture for a very long time, basically sitting with a tucked in pelvis or hunched over my desk. I wanted my posture to be fixed NOW so I tailored the adjustments of the chair with the pelvis support and upper back support holding me a bit TOO tight and upright. This turned out to be too extreme.
Asking for Help!
I consulted my friend and team member and our resident “Fix Your Sit guru”, Stacey. She told me to ease up on the settings and just be comfortable. So simple. That was the best advice. She likened it to getting your braces tightened. Just like straightening your teeth, correcting your posture is not immediate. I set the settings a bit looser and found that I was MUCH more comfortable. Backing off on the settings was key. I also realized I loved taking some of the gravity off my back and legs by frequently using the tilt feature to sit back slightly.
The Breakthrough: Loving my Anthros Chair
Fast forward two more weeks, and I noticed some pretty amazing things happening. My body actually started to get acclimated to sitting well.
Things I observed:
- Less Lower Back Pain. I noticed the severe lower back pain I had struggled with from working too many hours was hardly noticeable.
- Shoulder Pain Relieved. This was a big one. As a runner, this is a real problem area for me. I tend to clinch my shoulders pretty consistently while working. I suddenly noticed this area of my body that is chronically tight, dropped its tension. WOW. I found my shoulders relaxed!
- Changing Posture. The most noticeable thing is that, true to the design, my posture is actually changing and improving! This improvement has not only affected the way I sit, but I’ve found myself walking taller.
- Sleeping Better. One benefit that took me by surprise is that I actually feel like I am sleeping more soundly. I’m not sure this would be everyone’s experience, but it has been mine. I’m wondering, in my case, if that is an echo of the relieved shoulder tension.
The Verdict: Loving my Anthros Chair
So here I am, an Anthros insider, sincerely loving our chair. The journey didn’t play out exactly like I thought it would - I think, in part, because I wasn’t expecting any discomfort. So don’t be alarmed if you experience the same! I’m SO glad I pushed through those initial few weeks.
The results are remarkable.
My posture improved, my shoulders relaxed, and I noticed a newfound confidence in my stride. The chair had not just changed the way I sat; it had transformed the way I carried myself, even impacting the quality of my sleep. It’s incredible to know with continued use, the progress will be sustained and even continue to improve!
So, to anyone considering the Anthros chair, I say this: give it time, embrace the journey, and allow your body to adapt. The rewards of improved posture, enhanced comfort, and a greater sense of well-being are well worth it. I’m sincerely proud to be a part of the Anthros family and an owner of my long-awaited Anthros chair.
